MZAZA: The Birth & Death of Stars

World music favourites MZAZA have created a theatrical musical experience like no other - The Birth and Death of Stars. After successful national and international seasons, these consummate performers bring their acclaimed show to the Blue Mountains inviting audiences to leave the daily world behind to contemplate our magical place in the universe.

Inspired by history’s greatest philosophers and astronomers, join Australia’s most celebrated world music group for a theatrical musical experience that is out of this world. Blending stunning vocals in three languages with live music, animation, and collage animation, The Birth and Death of Stars is a surreal and inspirational journey into the ether from the nation’s most uniquely diverse musicians and composers.

Sitting comfortably between music and theatre, the show is brought to the stage by a powerful collaboration of creative minds featuring director Benjamin Knapton, Finnish animator Laura Matikainen, writer Pauline Maudy and design consultant Alison Ross.

Led by enchanting French vocalist Pauline Maudy, this group of outstanding musicians and songwriters from around the world will mesmerise you with inspired performances on accordion, violin, shah kaman, percussion, double-bass and guitar.

Vocal and Instrument Workshops

World music six-piece, MZAZA invites community musicians to be part of their new show, The Birth and Death of Stars.

Singers and instrumentalists of all ages are invited to learn a Sephardic wedding song based on a Turkish melody in two fun, concurrent workshops that are open to everyone; from beginners to advanced musicians.  
Participants are invited to perform a song with the band at the end of the show.
Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.


VOCAL WORKSHOP - World Music Songs with MZAZA

Must purchase show ticket to attend workshop - strictly limited places.

Embark on a musical journey through the poetic and melodic world of Jewish-Spanish music and explore ancient languages. Born in France and of Sephardic heritage, the award-winning lead singer of MZAZA Pauline Maudy will facilitate an uplifting vocal workshop for beginners and experienced singers aimed at sharing technique and getting you singing in harmony quickly. She is joined by accordionist and choir leader Ricardo Bona and double bassist Gwenny Warnick.

Participants will be supported by accompanying instrumentalists and will have an opportunity to perform as part of the show.

 

INSTRUMENT WORKSHOP - World Music Tunes with MZAZA

Must purchase show ticket to attend workshop - strictly limited places.

John Robertson (on nylon string guitar/uke), Greta Kelly on a variety of fiddles, and Tsoof Baras (percussion) will teach you a Sephardic folk song in a relaxed workshop that demonstrates some of the unusual rhythms, scales and ornaments of modal music. Bring your fiddle, guitar, ukulele, accordion, harmonica, hand percussion or any other instrument.
MZAZA will provide sheet music, tabs and also cater to those who prefer to learn by ear.
At the end of the workshop they'll invite you to join them on stage during the show to perform a song with the band. This workshop is open to all levels and supported with videos, charts, sheet music and a lot of humour.
